Spider Control Services in Northeast Ohio

Spiders: Identification, Risks & Professional Control

Spiders are a common household nuisance in Northeast Ohio. While most species are harmless and even beneficial in controlling other insects, some spiders can deliver painful bites or cause fear and discomfort. Large populations indoors often signal other pest problems, since spiders follow their food sources (insects).

At DHS Pest Control, we provide comprehensive spider inspection and treatment services to keep your home or business free of infestations. Our local experts use safe, targeted methods that eliminate existing spiders and reduce conditions that attract them.

Quick Facts About Spiders

  • Common species in Ohio: House spider, cellar spider, wolf spider, jumping spider, orb-weaver, and occasionally the more concerning brown recluse (rare) and black widow (rare but possible).
  • Size: Ranges from a few millimeters to over 1 inch.
  • Color: Varies widely (brown, gray, black, tan, or patterned).
  • Habitat: Basements, attics, garages, crawlspaces, woodpiles, sheds, and outdoor vegetation.
  • Risks: Some bites can cause irritation or allergic reactions; heavy infestations indicate other pest activity.

How to Identify a Spider Infestation

Signs include:

  • Webs: Visible webs in corners, ceilings, basements, attics, or exterior structures.
  • Frequent sightings: Regular spider activity inside the home or workplace.
  • Egg sacs: Small silk sacs attached to webs, walls, or hidden areas.
  • Other pests: Presence of insects, which serve as spider food.

Why Spiders Are a Problem in Northeast Ohio

  • Seasonal movement: Spiders often move indoors in the fall to seek warmth and shelter.
  • High reproduction rates: A single egg sac can contain hundreds of spiderlings.
  • Fear factor: Even non-venomous spiders create stress for many residents.
  • Potential bites: While most spiders in Ohio are harmless, wolf spiders and rare recluse or widow spiders can bite.

DHS Pest Control’s Spider Inspection Process

  1. Property Assessment — Inspect entry points, hiding places, and high-activity zones.
  2. Species Identification — Identify the spider species and evaluate risk level.
  3. Pest Source Analysis — Check for other pests that may be attracting spiders.
  4. Custom Plan — Develop a treatment strategy tailored to your property’s needs.

DIY Tips — How to Reduce Spider Activity

  • Vacuum regularly: Remove webs, egg sacs, and spiders from corners and ceilings.
  • Seal entry points: Caulk around doors, windows, and foundation cracks.
  • Reduce clutter: Keep storage areas clean and organized.
  • Limit lighting: Outdoor lights attract insects, which attract spiders.
  • Maintain landscaping: Trim vegetation and keep firewood stored away from the house.

What to Expect During & After Treatment

  • Inspection time: 30–60 minutes depending on property size.
  • Treatment duration: 45–90 minutes based on infestation level.
  • Results: Immediate reduction in spider activity, with long-term prevention through follow-up care.

I would like to give a huge shout out to Trent from DHS Pest Control. I was faced with a Carpenter Ant problem that caused significant damage to my sunroom. I called Trent at 12:55pm about my issue. He was on a job an hour away. He said he could be at my house when he was finished his current job. He arrived at my home in a timely fashion. He was polite, professional, and understanding of my situation. He did a thorough inspection of the inside, outside and basement of my home. Then he got to work treating the property. His price was extremely reasonable. If after 30 days I see any Carpenter Ants he will come back and treat the property for no charge. Where can you get a better deal than that? I highly recommend Trent Koller and his company.
