Termites: Identification, Risks & Professional Control

Termites are among the most destructive pests in the United States, causing billions of dollars in property damage each year. These silent invaders feed on wood and other cellulose materials, often going unnoticed until structural damage has already occurred. In Northeast Ohio, termite activity peaks during the warmer months but infestations can persist year-round.

At DHS Pest Control, we specialize in comprehensive termite inspections, advanced treatment methods, and proactive prevention strategies to keep your home protected.

Quick Facts About Termites

  • Common species in Ohio: Eastern Subterranean Termite.
  • Appearance: Creamy white to dark brown; soft-bodied with straight antennae.
  • Size: Workers ~⅛ inch; swarmers (reproductive termites) ~¼–½ inch with wings.
  • Habitat: Soil near foundations, wooden structures, crawlspaces, and basements.
  • Diet: Cellulose materials — wood, paper, insulation, drywall.
  • Risks: Severe structural damage, costly repairs, and reduced property value.

How to Identify a Termite Infestation

Warning signs include:

  • Mud tubes: Pencil-sized tunnels on foundations, walls, or crawlspaces.
  • Damaged wood: Hollow-sounding or blistered wood surfaces.
  • Discarded wings: Piles of small, equal-sized wings near windows, doors, or light fixtures.
  • Frass (termite droppings): Small, pellet-like material near damaged wood.
  • Swarming termites: Winged reproductives appearing in spring or early summer.

Why Termites Are a Serious Threat in Northeast Ohio

  • Hidden damage: Termites consume wood from the inside out, often undetected until structural weakening occurs.
  • Persistent colonies: Subterranean termites live in soil and continuously forage for food.
  • Property value risk: Infestations can lead to expensive repairs and impact real estate transactions.
  • Moisture dependence: Damp basements, leaky foundations, and poor ventilation increase termite risk.

I would like to give a huge shout out to Trent from DHS Pest Control. I was faced with a Carpenter Ant problem that caused significant damage to my sunroom. I called Trent at 12:55pm about my issue. He was on a job an hour away. He said he could be at my house when he was finished his current job. He arrived at my home in a timely fashion. He was polite, professional, and understanding of my situation. He did a thorough inspection of the inside, outside and basement of my home. Then he got to work treating the property. His price was extremely reasonable. If after 30 days I see any Carpenter Ants he will come back and treat the property for no charge. Where can you get a better deal than that? I highly recommend Trent Koller and his company.
