Wasp Nest Removal and Control Services in Northeast Ohio

Wasps: Identification, Risks & Professional Control Services

Unlike bees, wasps are not beneficial pollinators and can be highly aggressive when defending their nests. In Northeast Ohio, yellow jackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets are the most common stinging pests. Their painful stings, risk of allergic reactions, and tendency to nest near homes make them a serious nuisance.

At DHS Pest Control, we specialize in safe and effective wasp control. Our trained technicians can locate wasp nests, eliminate colonies, and provide preventive measures to keep your property safe.

Quick Facts About Wasps

  • Common species in Ohio: Yellow jackets, paper wasps, bald-faced hornets.
  • Size: ½” to 1″ depending on species.
  • Color: Black and yellow for yellow jackets; reddish-brown for paper wasps; black and white for bald-faced hornets.
  • Nesting sites: Underground cavities, soffits, eaves, wall voids, shrubs, and trees.
  • Risks: Multiple stings, aggressive swarming, and serious allergic reactions.

How to Identify a Wasp Infestation

Signs include:

  • Visible nests: Papery umbrella-shaped nests (paper wasps), football-shaped aerial nests (hornets), or underground nests (yellow jackets).
  • Increased activity: Frequent wasp flight patterns near entry points, gardens, or garbage bins.
  • Aggressive behavior: Wasps chasing or stinging when people or pets come too close to nests.

Why Wasps Are a Problem in Northeast Ohio

  • Aggressive defense: Wasps can sting multiple times and attack in swarms.
  • Outdoor disruption: Nests near patios, decks, or playgrounds make outdoor spaces unsafe.
  • Health risks: Stings can trigger severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
  • Structural hazards: Nests inside walls or attics may cause damage or lingering infestations.

Common Wasp Species in Northeast Ohio

  • Yellow jackets: Aggressive ground-nesting wasps often found in lawns, gardens, or near garbage cans.
  • Paper wasps: Build umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, decks, and porch roofs; moderately aggressive.
  • Bald-faced hornets: Large wasps that build large papery nests in trees and structures; very aggressive if disturbed.

DHS Pest Control’s Wasp Inspection Process

  1. Exterior Inspection — Identify nests on siding, soffits, decks, trees, or underground.
  2. Interior Inspection — Look for hidden nests in attics, wall voids, or garages.
  3. Species Identification — Determine which wasp species is present to tailor control methods.
  4. Risk Assessment — Evaluate nest size, location, and proximity to people.
  5. Action Plan — Recommend safe removal and prevention strategies.

Professional Wasp Control & Removal Methods

Our safe and proven solutions include:

  • Protective removal: Specialized equipment ensures safe nest elimination.
  • Targeted treatments: EPA-approved products designed to quickly neutralize colonies.
  • Exclusion sealing: Closing access points to prevent future nesting inside structures.
  • Preventive monitoring: Ongoing seasonal inspections to detect and eliminate new nests.

DIY Tips: Why You Should Avoid Do-It-Yourself Wasp Removal

  • Do NOT attempt to spray nests yourself — wasps can attack in swarms when threatened.
  • Avoid knocking down nests — incomplete removal leads to rebuilding.
  • Don’t ignore underground nests — yellow jackets often nest below ground and are hard to treat without professional methods.

For safety, call DHS Pest Control. Our technicians have the experience and tools to handle wasp infestations effectively.

What to Expect During & After Treatment

  • Inspection time: 20–40 minutes depending on property size.
  • Treatment duration: 30–60 minutes depending on nest size and location.
  • Results: Wasp activity typically stops within 24–48 hours.
  • Follow-up visits: Offered if additional nests are discovered.

Health & Safety Considerations

Wasp stings are painful and can be dangerous for people with allergies. Unlike bees, wasps can sting repeatedly, increasing the risk of injury. DHS Pest Control uses professional-grade treatments and safety protocols to protect your family, pets, and property.

Long-Term Wasp Prevention Strategies

  • Keep outdoor trash bins sealed tightly.
  • Seal cracks, soffits, and entry points around siding and eaves.
  • Trim shrubs and trees near structures.

The technician arrived right on time, explained everything in detail, and made sure I felt comfortable with the process. Their knowledge and attention to detail gave me complete confidence, and the results speak for themselves.

What really stood out was the level of customer service. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, respectful, and went above and beyond to make the entire experience stress-free. It’s rare to find a company that combines expertise, reliability, and such a personal touch, but DHS does it all.

I would like to give a huge shout out to Trent from DHS Pest Control. I was faced with a Carpenter Ant problem that caused significant damage to my sunroom. I called Trent at 12:55pm about my issue. He was on a job an hour away. He said he could be at my house when he was finished his current job. He arrived at my home in a timely fashion. He was polite, professional, and understanding of my situation. He did a thorough inspection of the inside, outside and basement of my home. Then he got to work treating the property. His price was extremely reasonable. If after 30 days I see any Carpenter Ants he will come back and treat the property for no charge. Where can you get a better deal than that? I highly recommend Trent Koller and his company.
